The U.K. stock market witnessed a positive close on Wednesday, with the FTSE 100 Index UKX marking a 0.36% gain and ending the day at 7,724.95.
Top Gainers
Among the constituents of the FTSE 100, the food retail company Ocado Group PLC OCDO outperformed others, with its shares surging by 3.89%.
Diversified business services firm Rentokil Initial PLC RTO and gambling industries company Entain PLC ENT also experienced significant gains, with their stocks climbing by 2.61% and 2.55%, respectively.
Phoenix Group Holdings PLC PHNX, a life insurance company, and general mining firm Anglo American PLC AAL secured spots among the top five gainers as well, with their stock prices rising by 2.34% and 2.28%, respectively.
Biggest Losers
On the other hand, Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC RR, an aerospace products/parts company, faced the most substantial decline among the FTSE 100 constituents, with its shares falling by 1.19% on Wednesday.
Mixed retailing firm B&M European Value Retail S.A. BME and containers/packaging company Smurfit Kappa Group PLC SKG also experienced losses, as their stock prices dropped by 1.16% and 1.07%, respectively.
abrdn PLC ABDN, an investment advisors company, and air freight business International Distribution Services PLC IDS concluded the list of the five largest decreases, as their stocks shed 1.04% and 1.00%, respectively.
Currency and Commodity Market Updates
The pound showed strength against the dollar, with a 0.54% increase to $1.2794. Meanwhile, it slipped slightly against the euro, with a 0.09% decrease to €1.1513.
Brent crude experienced a decline of 1.3% and settled at a price of $79.78 per barrel. Additionally, the yield on the 10-year gilt TMBMKGB-10Y dropped 6.780 basis points to 3.434%.
